An outline of what Care with Purpose (CWP) - Approach to care is and why Catholic Homes implemented this approach.
The Care with Purpose Approach is to “enable individuals to be as independent as possible, to have a meaningful place in their community, to have high self-esteem and to have the chance to
make choices and meaningful contributions to the community.”
It is an ability-based model aimed at supporting the client/resident to achieve their potential and is centred on knowing their past, their current abilities, and physical, social and emotional needs. It is ultimately all about choice.
Through substantial audits and research we identified the significance, choice of meals and protective dining, play in daily life. We in turn questioned how we could transform the traditional approach to dining in aged care to one that aligns with our CWP model. This resulted in the opportunity to develop training for staff. The unveiling of the Strengthened Standards further cemented this training and we will showcase this to you through the video below.
An overview of the benefits to our residents and clients
Once the protective mealtimes were established, findings showed the positive impact on the residents' wellbeing and the sense of community that came from this initiative.
Growing evidence that services underpinned by prevention, early intervention and enablement programs impact significantly on the autonomy, quality of life and wellbeing of people with functional disabilities. In particular those services provided within a holistic framework supporting individual’s physical and mental health, social connections and spirituality are shown to improve functional capacity, encourage active ageing and maintain independence of older people.
